If your home is to be closed for the winter you have some choices to make. You can have the water system drained. Most new homes are designed to have this done fairly easily. Older homes might be more difficult to do. You might want to have your Plumber take care of doing this for you. Don’t forget the washing machine, dish washer and ice maker.
If you can’t drain your house or don’t want to, make sure that your heat is set for no lower than 55 degrees.
Remove window AC units.
Close any storm windows or shutters.
Check all window and door locks.
Put an old broom handle or other piece of wood in the track of the sliding glass door. This will prevent it from being jimmied open.
Stop mail or news paper delivery.
Unplug all electrical appliances, especially television and cable boxes. Disconnect the Cable too. This will isolate them if your house is struck by lightning.
If you have an automatic garage door opener, unplug the power so it can’t be opened by anyone with a remote control. Be sure to lock the door. A simple padlock can take care of this.
Some people use timer lights to make it look like the home is still occupied.
This can be good but you should vary the times and rooms that are lit several times over the winter and don’t forget about time changes.
Change smoke and co2 detector batteries and keep a stock of spares on hand.
Notify your local police and Alarm Company that your home will be vacant and give them your contact information.
Don’t rely on friends, neighbors or contractors to keep a watch on your house. They take vacations too!
Hire a reputable Security Patrol Company to keep watch on your home.
